Bess is a feminine diminutive of Elizabeth, which comes from the Greek name Elisabet, originating from the Hebrew name Elisheva, also spelled Elisheba, meaning ‘my God is my oath.’ The root Hebrew words for this name are ‘El,’ meaning ‘God,’ and ‘shava,’ meaning ‘oath.’.
Bess is often considered a diminutive or nickname for Elizabeth, but it has also been used as a standalone name. The name Elizabeth itself means "pledged to God" or "my God is abundance." Despite being a diminutive, Bess has its own unique charm and character..
Meaning:* This name derives from the Biblical Greek “Elisábet (Ελισάβετ),” a form of the Hebrew name Elisheva (‘ĕlı̂ysheba’), which in turn is composed of two elements: the “ʾēl” (God, the God of Israel) plus “sh’ vu’a (sh-b-ʿ)” (oath)..
According to Donald Mackenzie in 1907, Bes may have been a Middle Kingdom import from Nubia or Somalia, [3] and his cult did not become widespread until the beginning of the New Kingdom, but more recently several Bes-like figurines have been found in deposits from the Naqada period of pre-dynastic Egypt, like the thirteen figurines found at .
