The model of the system is composed of the following parts: • Distributed Generation, this part of the system is composed only of Photovoltaic (PV) farms. Solar generation is considered the most suitable and feasible renewable energy source for Sudan due to the high solar exposure in Sudan..
Only 29% of Madagascar’s population and 39% of Mali’s have access to electricity. South Sudan, at 8%, holds the dubious distinction of being the least electrified country in the world. In some African nations, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), electricity access has been stunted by decades of conflict and political instability..
The general structure of the proposed hybrid energy system consists of a solar PV array, wind turbine, two diesel generators, battery storage system, and power converter. • Microgrid controller costs reported in the database per megawatt range from $6,200/MW to $470,000/MW, with a mean of $155,000/MW. • The soft cost category exhibits a high degree of variability, ranging from 1% to 75%..
The cost will vary based on the microgrid controller’s sophistication and project complexity. Most customers see a positive payback within two to three years of purchasing an advanced controller from Siemens, Jacquemin says..
For up to 30 elements, controllers generally cost in the range of $50,000 to $90,000. Costs go up from there and can reach an order of magnitude of $500,000. For many common scenarios, it may be possible to control the microgrid with only the generator controller, so that’s an important question to resolve early..
The cost of the basic elements of control — microgrid controller, real time automation controllers, remote terminal units, utility relays, communication are, in some ways, a surprisingly smaller piece of the cost puzzle than the cost of the physical infrastructure to make the desired function operate and the engineering required to sort it . Solar microgrids represent an efficient and secure solution for homes in Costa Rica, especially those located in coastal areas where the electrical system is unstable, with little or no electrical coverage. They offer multiple benefits ranging from energy backup to environmental sustainability..
Beyond localized emissions reduction, microgrids such as the one installed in Proquinal also have a broader positive effect. Costa Rica’s energy portfolio is 98.84% renewable generation, with hydroelectric providing 67.5% of the power..
At Avolta Energy, we are interested in supporting community microgrid projects of various sizes. In our experience, community microgrids (even small scale) are the point at which the economics of microgrids start to make real financial sense.
In addition to the mentioned types of electricity, Costa Rica is also promoting the development of distributed generation and microgrids, allowing consumers to generate and consume their own energy. If you are interested in investing in the country, Costa Rica offers a variety of electricity options for the commercial and industrial sectors . [pdf]
