That’s because Vatican City is soon set to generate 100 percent of its electricity from renewable energy, with Pope Francis announcing plans to build a solar plant..
Pope Francis has unveiled plans for a solar plant that will let the Vatican City generate all its electricity from renewable sources. With an area of 121 acres or 0.44km 2 and a population of around 825, the Vatican City in Rome is the smallest independent state in the world by both area and population..
This project will make the smallest country by land mass entirely energy independent, with all of its electricity needs met by solar power. Once completed, Vatican City will join Nepal, Paraguay, Ethiopia, Albania, Bhutan, Iceland and Congo as countries that generate more than 99.7% of their electricity from renewables..
Pope Francis appointed two special commissioners to start work on building an agrivoltaic system on a Vatican property outside of Rome that could supply the whole of Vatican City's energy. [pdf]
