Laos is not the only country with unfair energy pricing policies and unlevelled playing field between grid and off-grid. In Thailand for example, for customers of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), which distributes electricity to the whole country except in Bangkok, the first 50 kWh are free..
Rising domestic prices have pressured the state-run Électricité du Laos (EDL) – which owns and operates the country’s electricity generation and transmission systems – to consider raising electricity rates because it must import power using US dollars and sell electricity in kip at a predetermined price..
The peak time-of-use (TOU) rates can be double the price compared to off-peak rates. In such a scenario, a solar battery storage system can come in handy for using electricity without having to pay such a high price. In the case of most residential solar PV systems, a battery bank will not be necessary..
An off-grid house is disconnected from the grid and you have to install the best alternative. The best batteries for off-grid living will allow you to store energy from the solar system. Batteries are the most efficient and convenient power storage device when you are not using a diesel or petrol generator. [pdf]
