Energy storage secures and stabilises energy supply, and services and cross-links the electricity, gas, industrial and transport sectors. It works on and off the grid, in passenger and freight transportation, and in homes as ‘behind the meter’ batteries and thermal stores or heat pump systems. Energy storage in the form. .
In Australia, we are increasing our capacity for pumped hydro with Snowy 2.0 and the mapping and development of new sites like the Kidston. .
If we are to keep warming at close to 1.5 degrees C, we need to phase out carbon-intensive energy sources and replace them with low or zero-emissions alternatives. Currently we are electrifying our households, businesses and transport — using renewable energy. .
At CSIRO, we are interested in energy storage research on firming renewable energy technologies. Energy supplied by renewable energy technologies, like solar and wind, are variable — supply occurs when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing. At night or when. Energy storage technologies, like batteries, solar thermal and pumped hydro, can be used to build greater reliability and flexibility into Australia’s electricity grid. [pdf]

Flywheel energy storage (FES) works by accelerating a rotor (flywheel) to a very high speed and maintaining the energy in the system as rotational energy. When energy is extracted from the system, the flywheel's rotational speed is reduced as a consequence of the principle of conservation of energy; adding energy. .
A typical system consists of a flywheel supported by connected to a . The flywheel and sometimes motor–generator may be enclosed in a to reduce friction and. .
TransportationAutomotiveIn the 1950s, flywheel-powered buses, known as , were used in () and () and there is ongoing research to make flywheel systems that. .

• • • .
GeneralCompared with other ways to store electricity, FES systems have long lifetimes (lasting decades with little or no maintenance; full-cycle lifetimes quoted for flywheels range from in excess of 10 , up to 10 , cycles of use), high .
Flywheels are not as adversely affected by temperature changes, can operate at a much wider temperature range, and are not subject to many of the common failures of chemical . They are also less potentially damaging to the environment, being. .
