I'm operating on the assumption that the energy needed to lift the weight would equal the same energy generated by the weight falling (save for heat loss due to friction)? If this is the case, could ultra dense (wet sand, or denser?) weights be used to store energy in a practical application?.
They lift 35 ton blocks from groundlevel and stack them around the cranes, storing their potential energy with zero loss over time. if what they claim on their site is true, one setup would be Modular and flexible with plant capability ranges of 20-35-80 MWh storage capacity and a 4-8MW of continuous power discharge for 8-16 hours.
To solve this problem, several startup companies, including Gravitricity and Energy Vault, are pursuing lifted weight energy storage (LWES). As the name suggests, this technique stores energy by lifting large masses into the air and releases that energy by lowering the masses back down..
You can use dead weights, but you need a huge amount of weight. For example the biggest pumped hydroelectric system in the world (the Gianelli Hydroelectric Plant in California, USA) uses water stored in a reservoir about 9 miles long by 5 miles wide, lifted through a height of about 300 feet.
