Figure 1: Microgrid Model in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The model of the system is composed of the following parts: • Distributed Generation, this part of the system is composed only of Photovoltaic (PV) farms. Solar generation is considered the most suitable and feasible renewable energy source for Sudan due to the high solar exposure in Sudan..
Only 29% of Madagascar’s population and 39% of Mali’s have access to electricity. South Sudan, at 8%, holds the dubious distinction of being the least electrified country in the world. In some African nations, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), electricity access has been stunted by decades of conflict and political instability..
The general structure of the proposed hybrid energy system consists of a solar PV array, wind turbine, two diesel generators, battery storage system, and power converter. • Microgrid controller costs reported in the database per megawatt range from $6,200/MW to $470,000/MW, with a mean of $155,000/MW. • The soft cost category exhibits a high degree of variability, ranging from 1% to 75%..
The cost will vary based on the microgrid controller’s sophistication and project complexity. Most customers see a positive payback within two to three years of purchasing an advanced controller from Siemens, Jacquemin says..
For up to 30 elements, controllers generally cost in the range of $50,000 to $90,000. Costs go up from there and can reach an order of magnitude of $500,000. For many common scenarios, it may be possible to control the microgrid with only the generator controller, so that’s an important question to resolve early..
The cost of the basic elements of control — microgrid controller, real time automation controllers, remote terminal units, utility relays, communication are, in some ways, a surprisingly smaller piece of the cost puzzle than the cost of the physical infrastructure to make the desired function operate and the engineering required to sort it . To achieve energy security, diversification of energy sources is a key strategy in Bhutan. This involves the construction of various hydropower facilities, ranging from large-scale projects like the 1,125MW Dorjilung to smaller initiatives like the 18MW Suchhu..
The partnership is in line with Bhutan’s vision to expand its total energy generation capacity to 25,000 MW by 2040. Bhutan aims to achieve this goal by diversifying its energy portfolio beyond traditional hydropower to include solar and geothermal energy while exploring innovative project structures and financing through strategic partnerships..
Together, we are building 5000 MW of clean energy capacity that will help harness Bhutan's hydropower potential and support both countries' growing energy demands with reliable and round-the-clock clean energy supply..
Bhutan is soon to submit its own energy compact. For Bhutan to fully realize its renewable energy potential, it must have enabling policies that are forward thinking, encourage innovation, and provide fiscal and non-fiscal incentives for investing in renewable energy. Energy efficiency must also be greatly improved. [pdf]
