Target: 100% renewable energy; Status: Achieved; RES: 1MW off-grid solar energy system across three main atolls of Tokelau. The project includes : 4032 solar modules, 196 string inverters, 112 DC charge controllers, 84 battery inverters and 1344 batteries in 48V banks. The system allows for up to 2 days of energy without any solar input..
Work started in mid-June 2012 on the one megawatt Tokelau Renewable Energy Project, which is comprised of three individual solar power systems with battery storage. Each system alone is among the largest off-grid solar power systems in the world, and together they are capable of providing 150% of current electricity demand in Tokelau, a much . .
The Tokelau Renewable Energy Project was launched in 2010 and culminated in the installation of a photovoltaic-diesel hybrid system with battery storage on each of Tokelau’s three atolls; Fakaofo, Nukunonu and Atafu. The new solar power systems replaced the existing diesel systems and were designed to provide at least 90% of.
The government-backed project involved the installation of three solar systems with battery storage on the three atolls of Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo. A week ago New Zealand solar systems installer PowerSmart said it had wrapped up 1 MW of solar installations that can meet 150% of the current electricity needs of Tokelau. [pdf]

The technological challenges are not about the speed of battery-charging (which, after all, will be hooked up to continuous electricity), but rather how long they can store the energy – a real problem in electricity storage on a broad scale. Today, battery storage power stations can hold electricity for just three to seven hours..
Moreover, postponing the recycling phase for used batteries saves resources and energy while reducing waste generation. Yet, despite of the great potential, the integration of used EV batteries into the energy grid is still the exception to the rule. Major technical, logistical, regulatory and economic challenges still need to be addressed..
The secondary utilization of EV batteries for storing electricity from Renewable Energy Sources (RES) could simultaneously advance the decarbonization processes in the energy, transport and waste-management sectors..
